Objectif

Inscrire l'histoire du genre dans l'histoire littéraire et culturelle

Contenu

This introduction to Gender studies aims at providing a historical and cross-cultural background to the Unil students interested in gender and in the issues which have been associated to the concept between the 18th century and now. The approach, thus, will be diachronic as well as based on a selection of texts incorporating English and French sources. The chronological perspective is useful in more than one way: not only does it practically historicize and denaturalize gender, but it will also enable us to consider a number of ways in which gender was treated in its relation to various historical contexts. The class will be based on 6 groups of texts including literary extracts and a relevant text of criticism. In the course of the semester, introductory taught sessions in the form of lectures will alternate with sessions of group discussions prepared by students on the basis of the texts made available. These will cover the Enlightenment, the 1789 break, the 19th century, the 1920s, the Women's Lib and MLF years and today's post-feminism. The texts will be made available on Moodle and the first session will rely on Virginia Woolf's Orlando (1928) to introduce the concept and its implications.

Evaluation

Credits and grade are awarded on the basis of the participation in the class discussions and they include the writing of a short essay (1'500 words) to be written before the end of the term.

Bibliographie

Texts in pdf will be posted on Moodle by the beginning of the semester.
The text of Orlando I shall be using is the one from the Oxford World's Classics edition, a few copies of which have been ordered from Basta for those of you interested (it is not a compulsory reading).
