Bacterial Synthetic Biology
Synthetic biology is a rising interdisciplinary field where biological parts such as promoters and coding sequences are assembled to construct synthetic gene regulatory networks, signalling cascades and metabolic pathways that control the behaviour of novel, custom biological systems. These engineered biological systems have potential applications in almost every aspect of our lives, for instance in tissue engineering, in disease detection and treatment, and in the production of fine chemicals, biofuels and living materials. Synthetic biology also provides a powerful bottom-up approach to decipher general principles of the mechanism, function and evolution of biological systems by building simplified versions that are easy to study. In our lab, we are applying this approach by building and studying synthetic circuits in Escherichia coli, with a focus on gene regulatory networks involved in pattern formation.
