Recherches pluridisciplinaires sur le concept de croire

This multidisciplinary research project on the concept of belief concerns the forms of recomposition of the religious in our contemporary occidental society. From there, we will attempt to define the function that the act of belief plays, not only in the institutions properly called religious, but also in all symbolic institutions, individual or collective. In other words, we will analyze the belief in its practical function, as an act which determines the foundation of our behavior, both mental and social.
One fundamental postulate will structure the development of the research: the functional process of the belief constitutes the principle of all symbolic institutions. That is, a social institution exists only at the condition that one believes in it.
To develop this question, we will situate our research between two important contemporary debates concerning the status of the religious in modernity. What is at stake here is, on the one hand, the theories of secularization, which interrogate the transfer of systems of value from the theological to the political, while on the other hand, the sociology of religions, which analyze the systems of the recomposition of the religious in our contemporary societies. The main question can be formulated as follows: how was modernity able to drive the traditional religious to decline, while producing the conditions for new forms of religiosity?
