Social representations

In line with the social representations' theory, this area of research aims at analyzing the reasonings in everyday life, in particular about the processing of news items and about the transformation of information during its circulation. The processes of distribution and transformation of the scientific knowledge constitutes an essential aspect of the studies in this domain.

My research is concerned

with the study of social change, from the structural processes founding social influence (power, norms, interdependence, ..) to the cognitive and motivational mechanisms that determine individual change. This work is intended to show that it is possible to introduce a change in all human activities and structures, and to show which are the specific processes that underlie specific forms of change. The aim is to point out how change takes place even in the presence of non malleable cognitive "schemas", of unavoidable and uncontrollable "biases" in perception and in reasoning, of "stereotypes" that freeze our attitudes, of "abilities" that constrain our information processing mechanisms. This view counters a representation of human functioning that considers that such phenomena as racism, competition, exclusion, are stable and inevitable phenomena, since they are anchored on stable structures of human "nature". This research programme aims at studying the mechanisms--in particular conflicts --undelying change. This programme has been applied to five domains of human activity: perception, reasoning, learning, motivation and attitudes. These domains correspond to different levels of analysis.

Social Psychology of violence, insecurity and vulnerybility

The perspectives of the social representations and the relations between groups are mobilized for studying societal dynamics. Studies focused on violence, which emerges in various contexts (definitions of acts of violence, aggression in sport, the incivilities in the school contexts), and also on trajectories of individuals or groups which allow to understand the expression of insecurity and vulnerability under diverse forms.

Social value of motivation and the impact on performance

In this research field, we investigate the consequences of social (de)valorization of motivations (approach and avoidance) on the latter's effects. Specifically, in reference to the theory of social value of Beauvois and Dubois (2009), we study how the attribution of social value to performance goals at University (seeking to demonstrate competence in comparison with other students) can change their effects on academic achievement.

Under the supervision of Benoît Dompnier.

Social perception of older people

This research program focuses at better understanding how older people are perceived in society. Based on the bidimensional model of social judgment of Fiske et al. (2002) and the socio-cognitive perspective on age stereotypes (Hummert, 1999), we seek to explain some perception differences related with the existence of different elderly subtypes.

In collaboration with Valérian Boudjemadi and Antonin Carrier.
